pg.71 Let's Make Some Changes Right Now

First, write down four actions that you need to take that you've been putting off.
  1. Eliminating all beverage options from my life except for water and teas

  2. Getting consistent with my exercise, yoga, and flexibility training practices

  3. Completing my business plan so that I can launch my new business

  4. Using my personal organizational system on a daily basis

Second, under each of these actions, write down the answer to the following questions: Why haven't I taken action? In the past, what pain have I linked to taking this action?

Hmmm... the 'Whys' are kinda my perceptions and the 'Pains' are more so my reasons for inaction.

1) Only water and teas

Why haven't I taken action? There are many, many opportunities to attain and drink an assortment of unhealthy beverage options. I feel a craving for these kinds of tasty and psychoactive drinks and can't help myself. Many of the people I spend time with drink the things I'd rather avoid and often do so around me.

In the past, what pain have I linked to taking this action? The loss of choice. I don't want to give up the option to take in momentary pleasure or relief by drinking coffee, alcohol, or other beverages. Not being able to fit in and consume the way other people around me are consuming. I'll have to remain with my pain of discomfort or lower energy. Water and tea are boring compared to more stimulating or sedating alternatives. I won't have friends or sexual partners if I stop drinking.

2) Exercise, yoga, flexibility

Why haven't I taken action? I've found more comfort in pursing less physically demanding options for stimulation. I'll distract myself by playing video games, watching videos, reading, etc.. I decide that work or other obligations are more important and skip opportunities to exercise or attend a class.

In the past, what pain have I linked to taking this action? Time lost out of my daily schedule. If I go exercise and get sweaty, I'll have to spend more time cleaning myself up, commuting, getting gear out and putting it away again, doing more laundry, making sure I have food to eat so that I can refuel... so basically time lost and more resource demand.

3) Business plan

Why haven't I taken action? There is still a lot of confusion about what it is that I will offer as a service for customers in this business. I don't know that my business is viable for myself and the marketplace. I'm not yet confident in my abilities and willingness to deliver writing services to paying customers.

In the past, what pain have I linked to taking this action? I have to study and do the homework for my Biz Bootcamp on my own, taking more time out of my schedule. I'm confused by all of the legal, tax, accounting, federal, and state requirements which are important for the success of my business. I don't know what's most important and where to start. I have avoided dealing with any unknown, past-due requirements for operating my LLC that are still unresolved.

4) Organizational system

Why haven't I taken action? Sometimes I simply forget to review the system and manage its contents. A belief that my system isn't good enough and I want to spend more time fixing it or developing it to be better.

In the past, what pain have I linked to taking this action? This is not the most exciting way to spend my morning and evening time. If I use the system then I'll have to give up my freedom to pursue pleasure now and deal with the pain of the work waiting for me within the system. There is so much to do that the system presents me with, that I avoid the work it contains altogether.

Third, write down all the pleasure you've had in the past by indulging in this negative pattern.

1) Only water and teas

I have the ability to avoid and numb myself by consuming alcohol. Coffee gives me a warm cup to hold that contains a stimulating buzz for me to ingest. I give myself something to do by deciding to get out and acquire a beverage that will change my state.

2) Exercise, yoga, flexibility

In the moment, I get the freedom to pursue any other pleasure I want. If I am truly occupied with something else important that I want to create in my life, then I don't have to break my flow and fall behind in my work — There's more pleasure in accomplishing what I want to achieve that's already in motion.

3) Business plan

I get to do anything else I want. I don't have to think about how much work there is to do and can enjoy living in naivety. Also, my freedom from having to work.

4) Organizational system

Freedom from having to work... yeah, this is a recurring theme.

Fourth, write down what it will cost you if you don't change now.

1) Only water and teas

My teeth will continue to be stained and discolored. I'll keep getting drunk, hungover, and experiences losses when I drink too much alcohol. I'll waste money, lose my sex appeal, and deteriorate the overall quality of my life... I'll continue feeling tired, draining, and overwhelmed in dealing with the aftermath of my addiction to unhealthy beverages. I'll break trust in personal relationships as a consequence of my drinking

2) Exercise, yoga, flexibility

The overall health and appearance of my body will either remain in it's current "okay" condition or get worse; it will most certainly age in ways that I cannot control. My mind/body condition will continue to feel trapped, small, and weak. I'll never observe any noticeable improvement and will feel that I'm stuck within limitations that are impossible to overcome.

3) Business plan

I'll have wasted the $500 I spent to take part in the Biz Bootcamp self-employment training program. Each day that passes without me taking action is a day out of the 6-month consulting services period that I'll have wasted. I'll come to the end of my unemployment benefits and have to find a regular job again. I'll have to admit to myself and everyone else that I can't create a business and am a total failure in self-employment, again...

4) Organizational system

I'll have to deal with the anxiety and worry that there are important tasks I need to complete that I've been procrastinating on. When I think of something urgent or important that I need to take care of, I'll become alarmed that I don't have a reliable place to store and later retrieve this information so that I don't suffer a negative consequence later in life (like remembering to cancel a trial subscription plan before I'm charged).

The final step is to write down all the pleasure you'll receive by taking each of these actions right now.

1) Only water and teas

I'll know and feel that I'm hydrating myself and thoroughly cleansing my bodily systems. I can keep warm and cozy with a hot mug of deal while drinking in the delicious, natural flavors. My life will be filled with more clarity, simplicity, energy, and ease! I'll bring a powerful state of presence into my life and when I'm with other people.

2) Exercise, yoga, flexibility

I'll receive the rush and buzz of a good workout, rewarding my body with sweat activation, endorphins, and other pleasurable neurotransmitters. I'll feel much more proud of myself and the condition of my body. I'll know and feel that I am truly a sexually desirable specimen!

3) Business plan

I'll feel in control of my business, my financial wellbeing, and my destiny as a writer. I'll grow in confidence that I am both a good student and effective businessman. I'll gain the trust and resourcefulness of my business consultant so that I can grow in my own capacity as a consultant to friends, clients, and my peers!

4) Organizational system

I'll never let any pesky tasks get behind me and feel the freedom in knowing that I can attend to my self-care, business, and personal projects without restriction! I have an amazing flow to me day that offers me an abundance of time to connect and create.
